Scratchboard

Black and White Art

Lindsey Kiser’s artwork has been privileged to win two awards at art exhibitions hosted by the International Society of Scratchboard Artists. Scratchboard has its roots in etching and commerical art, but is considered a fine art medium today. The white china clay is layered onto a hard board and sprayed with a matte black India ink. Lindsey uses a sharpened knitting needle held in a pen vice to scratch layers of small marks into the black ink to reveal the white beneath.

Colorful Scratchboard Art

In some cases, she adds colors to the white clay and then scratches again and repeats the process until she is satisfied with the end result.

1 Hour Per Square Inch

All scratchboard fine art pieces are rare and unique. Each scratchboard is individually made by hand in the studio. It is not uncommon for Lindsey to spend one hour per square inch. No wonder there are less than 300 serious scratchboard artists in the world!
