Resplendent Flamenco by Lindsey Kiser
Resplendent Flamenco is an original artwork by Lindsey Kiser completed in traditional scratchboard by scratching the black ink off of the surface of the panel with a sharpened sewing needle to expose the white china clay underneath. Resplendent Flamenco showcases a male ruby-throated hummingbird about to drink nectar from pink crape myrtle blossoms. The crape myrtle petals reminded me of the ruffles of the flamenco dancers. This scratchboard was made made after making Replendence, which reminds me of the brilliantly detailed embroidery of florals on black silk kimonos.
THE ARTISTIC PROCESS
In August, I studied the hummingbirds on my crape myrtle in my front yard and took photographs on my feeders. I composed the composition in my mind’s eye back in the studio. I etched the scratchboard with a sharpened sewing needle to reveal the white clay under the black layer. Then, I added in colorful inks and finally the hummingbird was glazed with iridescent watercolor to catch the light. I then scratched back into the colorful ink and added a bit more color until I was happy with the effect.
