Description
Ruffed Around the Edges, scratchboard, 14″ x 18″, is the first piece in a new series entitled “Art that Honors the Hunt”. Ruffed Around the Edges showcases a backlit ruffed grouse.
Jeff and I hunt ruffed grouse every autumn with our two brittanys, Ruger and Holly, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Ruffed grouse are an elusive species who love habitat of freshly timber-cut woods, where there is just young regrowth and lots of fallen timber. It makes for very difficult observation and hunting, but they are worth the effort. Their loud drumming of their wings as they take flight is rush to experience, and their flashing aerobatics are a sight to behold. From my real life experience seeing the grouse on a log in 2022, multiple photographs and taxidermy, I composed this scene with the backlit ruffed grouse in an alert pose as the grouse listens carefully for the ringing of the dogs’ collar bells. As you may know from my other art collections, I love discovering fungi on hikes in the woods, so I included turkey tail fungi on the fallen log to add interest in the background and foreground of the piece.
