Description

In an increasingly divisive world, a return to nature reveals wisdom of the Ages. If whitetail deer and geese can share common ground, surely we can too. My artwork is more than mere materials; it is an invitation to enter into stillness.

“At least twice per week in July, my husband and I pretend we are wildlife biologists. It’s true! We take a drive through the county to count how many whitetail deer we can see. In 2025, we achieved our record high: 108 different deer! On one of these drives, we encountered a field of canada geese and whitetails feeding together. The experience and resulting photographs inspired Common Ground. A friend’s farm provided the inspiration for the landscape with its backlit timothy grass on the low side of a pond with a line of trees along a fence row at the top of the hill under the setting sun.”

ON TECHNIQUE:
Layers of sepia-toned ink were brushed onto a white clay panel. Lindsey used sharpened sewing needles and tattoo needles to scratch through the ink on each blade of grass and every detail of the timothy grasses, each goose, and each deer. The game trail on the far side of the pond and the beam of sunlight were all scratched through the ink washes to reveal the white clay beneath just as would be done in traditional scratchboard.

Common Ground, sepia ink on clay with scratchboard techniques applied, 12″ x 36″ x 2″, is part of “Art that Honors the Hunt”, a new series of work by Wildlife Artist Lindsey Kiser.
