Description

The Conservation of Wonder is an artwork, ink on clay, of a pair of bobwhite quail in flight between native grasses below and sky above. Paying careful attention to each feather and the patterns in each feather, Artist Lindsey Kiser suggests that attention brings forth a sense of wonder that gives rise to gratitude and onward to stewardship.

First, Lindsey painted the scene with ink on clay. After the ink dried, she engraved the feathers and grass with needles through the top layer of ink to reveal the white clay underneath to give the work its unique texture and style. Over several days, layers of ink were applied in the positive, while layers were subtracted line by line in the negative until the artwork was deemed complete.
