Echoes of Autumn honors a bygone era when quail coveys were plentiful in the South. I remember hunting wild quail in my teens with my parents, younger brother, and springer spaniels. The rush of hearing these beautiful birds take flight in all directions thrills the heart and inspires the soul.
Today, it is a rare occasion when our pair of brittany spaniels point wild quail. Fortunately, my husband and I kick up or our dogs, Ruger and Holly, point a covey maybe once per year, but not often enough. Quail are especially vulnerable in icy conditions when they cannot break through the ice to reach their supply of insects, spiders, seeds, and snails.
