His Sunday Best shows a Tom turkey, an eastern wild turkey, strutting, fanned out, and trying his very best to impress the two hens in the distance. He’s come down from his roost in the trees early this morning to an opening in the woods near the creek at the bottom of the hill. A soft glowing light envelops all of them as the turkeys play out their annual courtship rituals. Will he catch her eye?
His Sunday Best is a direct engraving in scratchboard that measures 14″ x 18″, unframed, but comes framed in black and silver, measuring 17″ x 21″. Every feather and intricate pattern is captured in detail by the artist’s sewing needle which has been used to make thousands upon thousands of minute engraved lines through the black India ink to reveal the white clay beneath the surface. The effect is both dramatic and nostalgic, as the line drawing is reminiscent of vintage etchings, like those of who designed our paper currency.
