August Birth Flower: The Poppy

August’s birth flower is the poppy.

Every winter, my family longs for our annual tradition of our first springtime hikes together. It’s a multi-generational tradition in which we pop quiz each other on the names of the wildflowers and budding trees. For the August Birth Flower painting, I found plenty of reference photos of the native wood poppy from those annual April hikes to Boone Cliffs Nature Preserve near my home in Union, Kentucky.

Poppies represent imagination, dreams, and the balance between the real and the imagined.

I have drawn in pen and painted in watercolor yellow wood poppies on cold press watercolor paper. The original painting is 7″ x 5″ and comes with a mat.
